prices still terribly low

Slightly more demand for onions in Europe

There is little change in the onions trade. "Except that the price has decreased even further. For special destinations the price may sometimes be adjusted somewhat, but for the rest the price is terribly low," according to Dutch onion trader, Jan Franje says. "But the quality is good and at least we have good onions available."

"European countries for the first time are requesting more onions now, but they are definitely no great volumes as yet. There are plenty of onions," Jan says. "We have not yet exported to Russia, but I understand that some lorries have gone to Russia. Also some potatoes appear to be going there."

Franje Onions have been specialising in organic onions for years. The organic onions are about a quarter of the total volume, of which about half goes abroad under their Organic Onion label. "I expect that we will continue with the old harvest for another two to three weeks. At the moment we already have Argentinian onions available."
