1.80 per kg at REO Auction House
First new potatoes put up for auction much earlier
At REO Auction House, Belgium, on Wednesday 11 April, the first potatoes of the new growing season were sold. Alain Vandewiele from Staden was responsible for the sale, which was markedly early in the year. The two cases of 15 kgs. each were sold at euro 1.80/kg.
The potato is a basic product in our daily food. The "plant with tubers" (Solanum tuberosum) is not only culinary appreciated for its good taste, but also for its versatility. The potato is also source of complex carbohydrates (mainly starch), which are our main energy suppliers. Researchers advise that at least 55% of daily energy-intake should consist of carbohydrates, mainly complex carbohydrates. This scientific advice means that we should eat four to five boiled or steamed potatoes (200 to 350 grs) daily, dependent on age, weight and physical activity. Nevertheless it is a widely spread misunderstanding that the potato will make you fat. A potato in relation to its volume and weight contains only few calories. A helping of 200 grs. of boiled potato only has 152 kcal and no fat at all.

The good product qualities ensure that the sale of the first new potatoes does not go unnoticed at REO-Veiling. The first sales of the new growing season took place on Wednesday 11 April. This is eleven days earlier compared to last year!
Producer Alain Vandewiele from Staden supplied the first new potatoes to REO-Veiling. "I have already supplied the first broccoli of the season," the horticulturist mentions. He supplied two cases of 15 kgs. each of the variety Amora.
The new potatoes were planted on 16 January for crop rotation in a dome conservatory. "Because of the warm autumn in 2011 the dome conservatory was nice and warm and the soil not cold at all in the period of planting. In addition the new potatoes were well sprouted. Planting and earthing of the early potatoes was not done immediately after each other, but with an interim period of about a month. In this way the potatoes are above ground more quickly. Last winter was very cold at the end of January. But we did not have to add heating to keep the frost out of the dome conservatory because the conservatory is out of the wind and directed towards the sun. During the severe frost period at the end of January the early potatoes were treble covered with a kind of tarpaulin. All these factors ensured the sale of new potatoes at REO-Auction House to be markedly earlier compared to last year" Alain Vandewiele explains. In addition to early potatoes in a dome conservatory he also grows potatoes in open ground on an area of about
6 HA.
Potatoes are available all year round at REO-Veiling. The new potatoes will be dug up till the middle of August and can be recognized by the skin coming loose when the tuber is rubbed. With storage potatoes the skin will stick. Last year 3.44 million kgs. of potatoes were delivered at REO-Veiling for the fresh market. Just about the same as in the previous year.
