Netherlands: New Egyptian season at Masr Fruit
The first fresh garlic arrived in Rotterdam 2 weeks ago. Masr Fruit have been receiving a container a day from Egypt, Mr Hamdy Ahmed, from Masr Fruit says the garlic is of top quality. Dried garlic will arrive early in May.
The first new season Egyptian onions will arrive at the beginning of May, both yellow and red. Masr Fruit will receive around 100 tons per week, quality is said to be high and the growing season faced no adverse weather conditions.
Masr Fruit are also awaiting the first Egyptian grapes which will be arriving at the end of May. This season the Egyptian grape harvest has been delayed by 10-12 days due to colder weather, but according to Mr Ahmed, this has also produced a good quality crop with better volumes and sugar levels. The first varieties will be Sugraone white seedless and Red Flame seedless.
As for the political situation, Mr Ahmed says they have faced some delays in the ports due to strikes but this has not had a significant effect on imports. He is confident that after the Presidential Elections in May the situation will settle down.
