Korean strawberry export to Hong Kong increases

The Korean strawberry season runs between November and May, the main variety exported is Mae Hyang. This strawberry is mostly grown in the Gyeong Nam province.

Mae Hyang has a deep ruby colour and has an elongated circular cone shape with a relatively firm texture. It’s high in sweetness and very fragrant.

Korea produces around 250,000 tons of strawberries. Last year around 1,200 tons were exported to Hong Kong. The volume this year is expected to increase. Korean strawberries sell for about HK$40 per 330g and HK$25 per 250g.

Strawberries had been cultivated in Korea since the turn of 20th century. The strawberry variety we see now days were originally from Europe and Japan. However with growing popularity and demand, hybrid types such as Maehyang has been developed by the Korea government.
