Slightly more vegetables
In 2011 a Dutch household bought 1 percent more vegetables than in 2010 and in total 73,4 kilos of vegetables were bought. Tomato remains the most popular vegetable by far, followed by onion and cucumber. The variations in the top 10 of the most bought vegetables are limited. Only cauliflower and lettuce on fifth and sixth place switched positions. The average price was four percent lower than in 2010.
Three percent less fruit
On average 85.5 kilos of fresh fruit was bought per household in 2011. This was three percent less compared to the year before. The spending per household was slightly higher, because the price for a kilo of fresh fruit in 2011 was higher than in 2010.
Apple is the most popular kind of fruit, followed by oranges and bananas. The purchase of 8 out 10 of the top ten fruits decreased. Only the volume of bananas and strawberries increased.
Supermarket turnover of vegetables stable, fruit increases
The turnover of the Dutch supermarkets in vegetables remained stable at over 2 billion Euro. 85 percent of the supermarket turnover of vegetables concerning fresh products (unprocessed and ready to cook).
