Season 2011/2012
Chile: Fresh and frozen berries´ market report US, EU and Asia
In the U.S. West Coast the blueberry presented stable activity without changes in price, a situation opposite to the East Coast, where the low availability of fruit in good condition generated a price increase, ranging between US$ 18-20/2kg (12*6oz) and US$ 28-30/330gr (1 pint). At retail level the average selling price was US$2.63 for the 170g (6oz) format, which in turn reported the highest number of promotions. While the format for 1 pint is now less than representative.
Blackberry: In the U.S., the blackberry market is dominated by the Mexican supply which is complemented thanks to Guatemala´s supply. The price level was around USD$12-14/2kg (12*6oz), for both providers, since the quality was homogeneous and that the inventories are kept at a moderate fruit level.
Europe
Blueberry: In Continental Europe the lack of color and loads of fruit with smaller sizes in some shipments from Morocco were detected. Although the Chilean offer presents mixed quality, especially with fruit that reflects a longer period of storage, with an average price increase or US$19.7-21/1kg (8*125gr).
Similarly in the UK, low fruit volumes generated price increases in the Chilean supply which was placed between US$11.8 to 13.2/1.5 kg (12*125gr), better prices have also been a result of increased quality and lower number of lots received during the week. The scarcity of fruit makes supermarkets, prefer smaller package formats, thus optimizing the volumes at their disposal. This indicates the need to increase the volume of shipments from Morocco and Spain, as the few lots that are received are sold at high prices. Moroccan fruit was sold at an average price of US$23.7/1.5 kg (12*125gr).
Raspberry: Sales prices have improved in part by the decline in shipments of fruit from Spain, where a low temperature decreased the number of exportable batches, as the quality of the fruit, placing the price average at US$ 15.8/1 kg. A small number of importers who managed to ship fruit from other providers less typical like Tanzania, are benefiting from this situation by placing sales prices between US$ 15.8 to US$ 18.4/1 kg due to the best fruit quality.
Strawberry: The Continental European market is still dominated by the Mediterranean supply. As for quality fruit Premium, income from some Northern European suppliers such as the Netherlands offer fruit from greenhouses at higher prices, mainly for food market.
Blackberry: The market is much more complex compared to last week, since the income of Mexican fruit was higher than expected. This was reflected in the price range, which fell from the previous week standing between US$ 18.5 to US$ 22.3/1.5 kg, because of this good prices were only kept for 10 weeks.
Asia
In Hong Kong/China the Chilean Season comes to a close. Shipment volumes are low expecting to end with about 30 tons during week 12.
