"Wim Moerdijk (Monie): "Extreme drop in demand"

Netherlands: Onion market in impasse

According to Wim Moerdijk of Monie the onion market has reached and impasse. "Is hasn't been as quiet as it is at the moment. A possible revival should come from Russia, but that's a matter of cents and if you have to pay before hand, we'll be waiting for a while. Companies stumbled over this last year too. Africa also isn't buying many onions. They are over supplied and have enough domestic harvest."

"The price level is around 4/5 cents, but due to lack of demand there's no real price on the market. The time for growers is starting to run out, but according to the onion trader the growers with good quality onions aren't in a hurry, which means the bad quality onions go straight to the consumer. And we don't want to make the mistake of exporting bad parties", concludes Wim.
