Spain: 40% of Almeria citrus exports to Germany

In January, the province exported 5 million kilos of orange, mandarin, lemon and grapefruit.



In January, companies in Almería exported 5 million kilos of citrus, some 47% more than in the same period last year. The shipments were valued 3.3 million Euro, representing a 34.4% raise from January 2011.

The most important sales correspond to orange, with a turnover of 1.5 million Euro and mandarin with a turnover of 1.3 million Euro. The export value for lemon was almost 370,000 Euro, while grapefruit sales in the external markets was around 70,000 Euro.

The German market is, according to the delegate from the Council for Agriculture and Fishing, José Antonio Salinas, the main destination for Almería citrus. In total, products valued at 1.4 million Euro were sent to Germany in January, almost 42% of the total exports. The French market received 25% of the citrus; the Netherlands 22.7% and Italy 10.1%. Smaller amounts were sent to Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Austria and Saudi Arabia.

The citrus sector is the fourth largest exporting sector in the province of Almería, with a 1.2% quota. In Spain, Almería takes the 8th place in the ranking of citrus exporting provinces, with a 0.8% quota. According to the Spanish Institute of External Commerce, the main exporting provinces for orange, mandarin and lemon are Valencia, Castellón and Murcia.
