Italy: Many transporters close and freight costs increase

For a while a lack of refrigerated transport on fruit and vegetable market has been recorded. FreshPlaza interviewedFederico Tartarughi of import/export agency GEL FREEZE.

FreshPlaza (FP) - Could you take stock of GEL FREEZE activities in the first quarter of 2012?
Federico Tartarughi (FT) - Even if in general the situation is not good (few orders but also few available trucks) and despite in the that first quarter of 2012 the market was limited, we were able to work more compared to the first quarter in 2011, thanks to the diversification of routes.

FP - Which are the more frequent destinations?
As for exports, the most frequent destinations are England, Germany and France. As for imports, the main flows coming from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

FP - The cost of transport has been increased for a long time. Why?
FT - There are various reasons: the increase in price of fuel, assurance and tolls and further the lack of trucks. We expect the freight trend to continue to increase in 2012.

FP - What are the implications of the economic crisis in your business?
FT - The most difficult aspect of the economic crisis was the lack of liquidity: that's why many transporters closed and continue to close their activities.
