Switzerland: Increased berry cultivation

The Swiss agrarian information services LID mentions that the cultivation of summer fruit in Switzerland will increase by 5% this year. The total area used for berry cultivation will then be 784 HA. The area used for growing blueberries will increase most. This year the area will grow from 55 HA to 66 HA and with that be bigger by 20% than last year. The strawberry area will increase by 7% to 473 HA and the raspberry area increases by 3% to 150 HA. 
 
According to the German Central Bureau of Statistics, strawberries were grown on 13,848 HA in Germany last year (13,488 HA open ground, 360 HA covered cultivation. With this especially the covered cultivation increased considerably compared to 2010, namely by 52%. Blueberries were grown on 1,434 HA during 2011 (+0%) and raspberries on 1,118 HA (-1%).
