Panama: Plantain price could rise

The Progreso plantain producers, in the District of Baru, of the Chiriqui providence (Panama) said that some 500 hectares of the area were affected by the storm that hit the region this weekend and did not rule out the plantain price going up.

The plantain producers asked the National Government and the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) to make an inventory of damages, to help farmers.

Salvador Degracia, Prosecutor of the Plantain Growers Association of Baru, said that for three straight years nature has been affecting the plantain producers, leaving many of them out of business.

He added that between 200 or 300 producers have been affected by the fury of nature in this sector.

MIDA said that this early this week an inspection will be carried out of the affected areas, so as to make a report of the damage and of the possible recommendations for aid the government may give to producers.
