Peru: Upward trend for strawberry exports

According to a producer and exporter, the strawberry campaign in northern Peru between the months of September and December 2011, was quite interesting. There were good prices and its production was sold completely due to the low supply of the fruit in the international markets.

So far, in Peru the strawberry market for export is governed by small producers and exporters of medium size who consider in order of importance the United States, Europe and Asia as the main destinations for the fruit. "Japan is a very interesting market for strawberries, but it takes time to negotiate with the Japanese," says one of the exporters.

According to information published by Agraria Peru, during the months of January and February of this year, the main export destination for the Peruvian strawberry was Belgium, who received 21% of total exports (1,189,475 kilos), followed by Germany and the United States. During the same period, an increase in exports of 14% compared to the same period of last year were seen.
