John van Laethem:

"A strong demand for dragon since January"

The new growing season has again started at Van Laethem and the various items in the assortment are proudly presented."This season we have eight different thyme varieties, six of mint and six basil varieties. Examples are orange thyme, melon basil and ginger mint" John tells enthusiastically. "Chefs of top restaurants each year find it of interest to test new herbs. Every season new varieties are again awaited with interest. This time for instance we have common chickweed."

"Every year van Laethem take part in the Horeca Life Beurs in Brussels.
Gastronomic Brussels and surroundings visit to get to know the latest
tendencies. The Bell'aroma team promote the tasty suggestions based
on herbs and edible flowers there" as per John.

Strong demand for dragon

"It is striking that since the beginning of January up to now the demand for dragon is strong. During the last few years demand for this decreased, but now we notice that the interest in the herb is increasing. On average we sell 350 kgs per week. In general production is low, but we have sufficient supply from Israel. Our product requirements are severe and the residue value is very low. Clients are prepared to pay a little more for this. We also pay the grower a little more and in this way we receive the originally arranged volume even in case of shortages."

John mentions that they have been active in the United Kingdom since last year. "We find this to be a growing market and have made good new contacts. This year we will also approach the Scandinavian countries." Since last year the company grew by leaps and bounds. How can we keep up with this growth? "A big advantage is that we have our own tracing system, as a result of which our company processes run without fault. Because of the correct investments we will continue to grow."

The own cultivation of Van Laethem grows every year as well. In addition to our company in Belgium we have plans to develop in the Mediterranian area where we want to grow special herbs. Our own 'herb assortment' we can increase as a result and also the export posibilities will increase then."
