South American mango exports to US down slightly

According to the National Mango Board, the amount of mango sent to the United States in the second week of March was about 1,756,817 boxes, 2% less than in the week before.

From the total of imported mango in the week 10, 245,234 boxes came from Peru, representing 36% less than in the week before. The mango season is reaching its end in Peru, so the last shipments will be done by the end of this month and, according to NMB, the approximate total of mango exports from Peru to the US is 6.2 million boxes.

Mexico sent 1,397,039 boxes during the second week of March, representing 10% more than in the week before. We are in the second month of Mexican mango campaign, which will be in season until September and it's expected that a total of 54.4 million boxes will be exported to the US. According to last year's statistics, 32% of the total of Mexican mango imports by the US were Tommy Atkins, 26% were of Ataulfo, 34% of Kent, 11% of Keitt and 7% of Haden.



The amount of mango from Costa Rica, imported by the United States during the second week of March was 14% higher than the import during the first week of March, with about 104,544 boxes. The most important variety in Costa Rica is Tommy Atkins (which represents 75% of the exports) and Irwin (with 25% of the exports). According to the National Mango Board, the mango season in Costa Rica started at the end of February and will end in June, with about 600,000 boxes.
