Brazil: Good quality apples

In the Brazilian regions Fraiburgo and Vacaria the harvest of Gala apples has finished. At the moment Fuji apples are being picked there. In total the association of Brazilian apple growers expect a harvest volume of 1,187 million tons this season.

Although the expectations were higher in the beginning, the prognosis after the hail storms had to be adjusted downwards by 5%. Gala and Fuji are the important varieties in Brazil and form about 95% of the production. In the area of
São Joaquim small quantities of Gala are still being picked. The Fuji harvest started at the beginning of the month. This region, however, was hit hardest by hail storms. In some parts almost half of the harvest was damaged, as per Freshfruitportal. In total the fruit distinguishes itself by the nice colour and a well balanced ratio between sugar and acids; in addition the peel is nice and smooth. "Because of the quality this is one of the best harvests in the history of Brazil" as cited by the on-line magazine Lopes de Albuquerque. "After two years with fruit of above average size this year the apples are of average format. Despite the hail damage in certain regions the effect on the whole country is smaller than in the 2010/2011 season" putting his concerns into perspective. As far as the export is concerned he is prepared for negative circumstances. The quantities stored in Europe are comparatively very high still and the rate of exchange with a strong Brazilian real will not be favourable for the export.
