UK: Record early Cornish Maris Peer new potatoes at M&S

M&S’s earliest ever UK mainland Maris Peer new potatoes will hit the shelves on Monday 26th March marking a record in the availability of the variety. Traditionally, early Maris Peer has been available from late April but this year’s crop has made an extra early appearance in Cornwall, and in M&S stores too.

Louisa Read, Vegetable Buyer at M&S comments: "We are delighted to have the very first UK Maris Peer new potatoes on our shelves this year. This extra early crop was grown by specialist early producer Mark Rowe, making good use of carefully selected and sheltered growing areas, and Cornwall’s milder winter climate".

She continues: "Consumers trust M&S to offer them the freshest produce throughout the year, and the fact that our favourite new potato variety is available so early in 2012 means that M&S customers can buy the freshest and tastiest new potatoes on the high street earlier than ever before".

Maris Peer is a widely available new potato, and according to experienced food writer Sarah Jane Evans, it has a skin that 'peels off easily when cooked to reveal a pale cream flesh. The texture is firm, and holds its shape well making it ideal for potato salads'. It is available in 500g packs from M&S stores.
