Sander Scherff of FruitWorld

"Shortage of Spanish strawberries demand on Dutch increases"

There is some talk of a small shortage of Spanish strawberries. "I understand that there was quite early a change to 500 grs. instead of the customary 250 grs. and now not enough volumes are available" Sander Scherff of FruitWorld from Breda tells. "The Spanish season indeed started earlier than normal, but the cold weather of the last few weeks decreased the supply. The demand is therefore reasonably good."

"Many Spanish suppliers actually expect more strawberries every week, but up to now this has not happened as yet. It is hoped that the boom in Spanish strawberries not comes at the same time as the cultivation of the Dutch Elsanta's" Sander continues, who intimates that he together with all clients wants to change as soon as possible to the Dutch product.

"At the moment there are Dutch Clery, Sonata and Lambada strawberries available. The prices of the Dutch strawberries are very good and the supply increases from week to week. The demand also increases as it is light for longer. The good price of Spanish strawberries may well be favourable, because then the difference with the Dutch strawberries is not too big and clients change quicker" Sander concludes.
