Georgia: Kiwis to UK in by 2013
Founder and director Konstantine Vekua, expects to export 2000 tons a year of thier own produce and add a further 2000 tons bought from other growers.
He is keen to talk about the agricultural potential of Georgia, "Our country is protected by the Greater Caucasus mountains range on the north which stops cold Nordic air masses. In the south there are the 2500-3500m high Minor Caucasus mountains range which moderate the hot air masses from Arabian deserts. Within Georgia on the west side, there is one particular region called Samegrelo which additionally gets humidity in Summer and warm air in Winter from the Black Sea. During the recent extreme cold weather in Europe the region Samegrelo also experienced frosts but not below -3C while during the daytime temperatures mostly maintained 4C - 8C".
In other "normal" years the average temperature of coldest month of January is between +3.5C and +6.5C.
Nergeta is already in discussions with one of the UK’s largest fruit importers, which it said was “very interested” in supplying Georgian kiwis to the UK big retailer.
Georgia’s total commercial kiwi crop was expected to be about 600,000 kgs next year, of which at least 50% would be available for export, Vekua added. The company has its own cold storage and pack house.
