Austrian open ground cultivation 11,406 HA

Vienna - Statistik Austria have published figures about the development of the vegetable cultivation in the field in Austria during 2010. There were 1,962 companies in this year active in open ground cultivation. This is 57 companies (2.8%) less than at the time of the previous investigation in 2004. Despite the decrease of the number of companies the total area of cultivation increased by 15.2% to 11,406 HA.
 
When looking at the distribution of the area of the various Austrian federal states, more than half of the total area, namely 7.186 HA (+13.9%) was in Lower Austria. Following this are Upper Austria with 1,306 HA (+28.9%) and Burgenland with
1,206 HA (+14.8%). In these federal states and in Kärnten with 106 HA (+33.8%), Salzburg with 140 HA (+30.5%), Tirol with 553 HA (+35.7%) and Vienna with 185 HA (+34.3%) the area has grown. This in contrast with the federal states Steiermark
(-7.9%) and Vorarlberg (-18.9%) were the areas decreased.
 
Cultivation of vegetables varieties
Onions were the vegetable variety mainly grown. These were grown on an area of 2,735 HAm which is 21.7% of the total area of cultivation. After the onions followed the 'other vegetable varieties' (for instance consumption pumpkins, sugar maize) with 1,898 HA (15.1%), carrots with 1,525 HA (12.1%) and beans with 1,316 HA
(10.4%).
 
Beans were again grown on the biggest area (namely 807 HA) for contract cultivation. After that followed 'other vegetable varieties' with 401 HA, carrots with 281 HA and beans with 265 HA.
