Italy: How climate affected Sicily during the first months of 2012

FreshPlaza spoke with Sergio Giardina of the Sicilian company F.lli Giardina about the climatic situation in Sicily in the first months of 2012.

As Sergio says, while Sicily was affected by truck drivers' strike (starting on 16 January) whose effects lasted for three weeks for producing companies, in the same time a succession of frosts is recorded (in some areas -13-14°C).

"Obviously, this had significant effects on crops: no colour for tomatoes and/or slow growth for courgettes and cucumbers for example. In the next weeks we will see the consequences on open field crops, such as early potatoes and lettuce."

"Further, the extreme cold has speeded up the end of greenhouse crop season, already planned to finish at the end of February or early March. Frosts affected also some batches of late oranges."

But there is more. In fact, after problems due to the truck drivers' strike and frosts, Sicily was affected by a real deluge of rain!

As Sergio says: "This has affected most of areas of East Sicily for three consecutive days, early last week. In some companies the water level reached 130 mm in a day! The last rain caused some damages in greenhouses, but above all serious damage was to open field crops."

"Now it is impossible to count the loss. We have to wait for a better weather, but we expect consequences will be not few."
