New Perishable Cargo Centre in Accra, Ghana
On the 15th February 2012 a new Perishable Cargo Centre was officially commissioned. Representatives of the Ministries of Trade & Industry and Food & Agriculture were present as were the US Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation, local Ghanaian organizations and the Dutch Ambassador Mr. Gerard Duijfjes.
The Perishable Cargo Centre is part of the postharvest interventions provided under the Ghana Compact. The facility will provide handling and temporary storage of perishable produce, such as fruits and vegetables.
Parallel to the Perishable Cargo Centre several Field Pack Houses are under construction, in which sorting, packing and cooling will take place.
It is the intention of Ghana to create uninterrupted cold chains nationwide.
The project cost is US$2.473 million and will be owned by the Government of Ghana through the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The facility’s area itself is about 1200 m2 with a storage and cold room of each 200 m2. The facility has a shaded packing area of 350 m2 and work room of 600 m2. The throughput is approx. 20,000 metric tons annually. It is the intention to increase the throughput by 5% annually.
The facility has been based on a modular design; both building and cold room can be enlarged phase wise. Various inputs can be handled, such as loose boxes, skids, air pallets and air containers.
The Kotoka International Airport has an air pallet scanner, close to the facility’s exit at the air side. This ensures any interruption of the cold chain will be very short.
The figure below shows the lay-out the centre.
