Grower Christof Callewaert:
"Cabbage season a disaster"
"We really received very little for our cabbages this year" cabbage grower Christof Callewaert from Koolskamp, Belgium says. "Since the beginning of December it has been going badly and so far there is no improvement." He mentions with disappointment. "There is too much supply and not a strong demand. An important cause is that the real winter weather did not last long enough. Also crops in most European countries were sufficient."
"Also during the cold winter weather in the beginning of February there was no increase in price, according to the grower. "During the period of frost there was even talk about a slight decrease. It was expected we would sell more because of the cold weather, but there were far too much volume. Last week the prices for white cabbage were about 7/8 cents for six. The red cabbage is more expensive at 15 cents. But this is still too low."
The grower does not expect an improvement anymore in the market this season. "There is a lot of cabbage still in stock and it does not look like the supply is getting less. But the demand is getting less, however."
