Joep Jongmans, Capespan Continent:

"South Africa: "Top fruit season improving"

The South African top fruit season is presently not as good as in the beginning of the season. This is according to Joep Jongmans, product manager of top fruit of Capespan Continent. "The supply is good, but sales are a little quiet at the moment. This is the result of the cold weather in the beginning of February and now also the carnival/holiday period. But at the end of this week already and the beginning of next week I see an increasing demand."

Joep mentions that Germany is the most important sales market for Capespan. "We notice that the demand there is less. But also in other countries, such as France, Russia, the Netherlands and Belgium consumption is lower."

Striking this season is the good quality of the South African top fruit, says Joep. "Because of the good weather and growing conditions in South Africa the brix value is high and the taste first class, good sugars, nice plums. "The South African top fruit season runs till the end of March/beginning of April. Prices of the plums are between 9 and 6 Euro and are dependent on quality, size and type of packing."

"The supply of plums from South Africa is good. We have plenty of red plums in the assortment and we expect the first yellow Songold plums this week." The importer explains that they currently offer plums and nectarines. "Peaches were only available from Chile at the start of the import season. That is now at an end. Nectarines have a good supply now from Chile. Also some of the plums comes from there. The difference with the South African plums is that Chile is better with the late varieties, such as Fortune, Larry Anne and Angeleno. The latter mentioned will be available from March till the end of April."

New this season is that Chilean nectarines are marketed under a new Chile-Capespan label. "These have been ripened already and are therefore ready-to-eat" Joep says. "The nectarines are of a strictly selected quality and are of the same ripeness as a real premium." Capespan Continent is the market leader for the import and marketing of South African top fruit and Chilean nectarines.
