Southern Hemisphere: Estimated apple production decrease on 2011

Apple production in the Southern Hemisphere registered a slight decrease of 2% compared to 2011, totalling 5,539,000 metric tons, according to the World Association of Apples and Pears (WAPA).
 
Argentina, Brazil and New Zealand would experience a drop in yields of 9.5% and 2% respectively. Meanwhile Australia would experience an increase of 13%, while Chile would experience a 2% rise. South Africa would remain on similar levels.
 
In terms of varieties the Braeburn apple has experienced a greater drop in production, in the Southern Hemisphere with 14%. Following this are Red Delicious (9%) and Gala (3%). By contrast, Cripps Pink, Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith, would
have an upward trend with 11%, 9%, 6% and 1% respectively.

For pears, the production will reach 1,521,000 MT, which represents a decline of 1% from last year. Shipments abroad would reach 721,991 MT, 14% more than in 2011.
 
With the exception of South Africa, which will experience an increase of 2% in pear production, the rest of supplier countries registered a fall: Argentina (2%), Australia (4%), Chile (2%) and New Zealand (9%).
 
It will be the Forelle variety which will experience a greater increase in volumes (5%) while Beurre Bosc, Packahm'sy Williams,will go down with 1%, 2% and 3% respectively.
