Costa Rica: WTO urges banana producers to compete
"There are chances one can't miss, so that's why one must progress in competitiveness on the productive level, to manage innovation, to have better quality controls and to comply with environmental demands, but a link to many services like transportation and fumigation are also required", said Alejandro Jara.
According to the leader of the WTO, negotiations today are different, since now there are commercial relations with a bigger inducement that limits the chance of industrialized countries to move decisively in order to reach agreements.
"We have a transitory situation, it's a big challenge but also places a chance for the banana sector to make a revision and prosecute negotiations to meet most immediate interests and advance for the commercial liberalization and the elimination of distortions in benefit between producers and consumers" added the representative.
This subject was part of the Conferencia Magistral "Opportunities and challenges for the banana industry in Latin America after the Geneva Agreement", during the IV International Congress about Bananas.
This event was organized by the National Banana Industry Corporation (Corporación Bananera Nacional - CORBANA S.A) during its 40th anniversary celebrations, opened last Tuesday in the presence of the Republic's President, Laura Chinchilla, the ministry of Agriculture and Live-Stock, Gloria Abrahams, the leader of External Commerce, Anabel González, the president of the directive committee of Corbana, Romano Orlich and the general manager of Corbana, Jorge Sauma.
