Portugal: Big distribution chains compromise to promote national produce

Portuguese distribution chains compromised to give preference to national producers of fruits and vegetables through a protocol made with the National Federation of Fruits and Vegetables Producers Organizations (Federação Nacional de Organizações de Produtores de Frutas e Hortalizas - FNOP).

The protocol has as its objective "to stimulate the access to horticultural products" by supermarkets, and the creation of a organization for the fruits and vegetables sector that can contribute to "a better knowledge and transparency in the markets".

The Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies pointed out that "about 80% of the horticultural products offered in distribution are national products".
