Bart Nemegheer: De Aardapplehoeve

"Europe: "Only quality potatoes at good prices"

Despite the hopeful expectations of the potato trade the market remains quiet. "Everybody expected a recovery around February and in periods of frost, but so far not yet" as per Bart Nemegheer of the Aardappelhoeve, Belgium. "Production is too high and the market is full. Price are stable and I expect that it will remain quiet in the market for the time being. In my opinion there will not be a worthwhile recovery but only some movement."

"Especially for the export it is difficult," the potato grower explains. "It is a combination of factors and of course the crisis is one of them. Greece and the Easternb bloc countries have payment problems and there is not much movement in those kind of countries." The quality of the potatoes is not as good as last year. "An important cause of the not so good quality is that part of the potatoes was excessively ventilated and consequently aged. And for export the potatoes should be the very best. There are standards." The processing market increases fast, according to Bart "But the industry cannot accept all volumes."

"Talking about competition then France is important" the grower mentions. They are strong in export and supply good quality. As production is high there as well France export at clearance prices. They were always more expensive, but that is not the case this year. Hardly anybody can do better."

"It looks as if potatoes of very good quality will fetch better prices at the end of the season. Only the really nice golden yellow ones will possibly be sold at a high price."
