Lower Franconia: good year for seed potatoes

The seed potato area in the Bavarian region Lower Franconia increased from 74.04 hectares in 2010 to 85.07 hectares in 2011. The region is developing into the centre of the North Bavarian seed potato cultivation.

The most commonly grown variety in Lower Franconia was the early type Agria, of which the area grew by 18.73 hectares, followed by the very early variety Anuschka, of which the area increased by 8.97 hectares and the early Marabel, of which the area increased by 8.86 hectares. The harvest went surprisingly well in 2011. 39,000 kilos of seed potatoes were harvested per hectare in 2011. This is 6000 kilos less than the year before, but then again, 2010 was a record year.
