Spain: Citrus benefit from damages in Turkey
Low temperatures reduced horticultural production in the North of Europe, especially of crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, potato and broad beans. Turkey also suffered in its production of lemons.
Due to this, this agricultural association says that "frosts are allowing us a breath of optimism, gone years ago when an origin prices crisis was implacable".
For example, origin prices for broccoli from Alicante went from 0.23 Euro per kilo to 0.4 Euro; cauliflower prices went from 0.30 to 0.60 Euro; like the raises in potato and broad bean.
Lemon producers, going through the "most harmful campaign in history, with ruinous values for years in a row", according to ASAJA, "are now hoping to reach better times".
One of the competitors, Turkey, registers drops in production and the fruit waiting to be harvested "already presents damaged quality".
Until now, the low temperatures in the Spanish province only caused damages here and there in medlars, vegetables and citrus, most of the damages caused by the wind and not the cold.
Moreover, the cold is benefiting orchards, like cherry, apple and vineyard.
"With the Winter rest, caused by low temperatures is adequate, in Spring the tree gets stronger, so quantities are bigger and the quality too", added the same source.
