Mexico: A good year is expected for agriculture

Last year´s season was not good at all due to the effects of frost and growers hope 2012, will be a better year, said the president of the Vegetable Growers Association of the Yaqui and Mayo, Carlos Alberto Esquer Lopez.

The frost damaged crops such as squash, tomatoes, tomatillo, peppers, watermelon and potatoes, severely affecting the producers´economy, in addition to damaging the labour situation.

"So this year, especially in February, we hope that the temperature does not get any lower, because if it does it will affect farmers, but unlike last year they are more and better prepared," said APHYM´s president.

This current year sees a planted area of about nine thousand hectares, standing out are potato crops with almost five thousand hectares. Regarding health issues, Esquer Lopez, recalled that last year was a good year in relation to this, something they expect to continue this year.

This present season has healthy vegetable crops, reiterated APHYM´s President.
