2000 hect, suffer river flooding

Rivers are threatening banana plantations in Ecuador

The sudden rise of the Cañar river, on Wednesday morning, flooded at least 2,000 banana hectares of the Parish Puerto Inca, Naranjal Canton, in the province of Guayas in Ecuador.

The overflow broke free in San Juan´s area, in kilóemtro 61 of the Guayaquil-Machala road. Water entered and flooded banana, cocoa and rice crops. Naranjal´s Mayor, Marcos Chica, estimated that at least 2,000 ha of banana were under water.

The strength of the current broke a 50-meter stretch of path leading to the village of San Juan and other estates in the sector. Downstream, the river overflowed and flooded homes and plantations in the villages El Trapiche and St. Augustine. The overflow of the Cañar river also endangered the bridge of Puerto Inca, which connects to the province of El Oro

The flood swept palisades that accumulated on the bridge. The Ecuadorian Transit Commission partially closed the bridge. Traffic on Guayaquil-Machala route, was resumed at 12:00. Machinery from the Department of Risk Management and the municipality of Naranjal were working until the afternoon in placing stone material in part of the river to divert water and prevent water-logging more plantations.
