Small amounts

EU: High prices for Chilean stone fruit

According to Christ Martín, from VIP Marketin Inc. in the US, Chile is one of the main suppliers of stone fruit to the US market, so, the drop in sent amounts is translated into high prices for the imported fruit.

Martín added that it's not expected that amounts of Chilean stone fruit will be improved significantly in this season, so prices will be kept "strong" during the remaining importing season.

"We had a bigger amount last year", said the representative, adding that "this year the situation is slightly different".

For Martín, this relates to the fact that many Chilean producers abandoned the production of stone fruit, resulting in a smaller amount destined to enter the US and a corresponding raise in the average prices.

Registered prices are US$16 to US$24 for a box of plums; US$16 to US$22 for nectarine and US$18 to US$24 for Peach.
