"Good pear market, apple market under pressure"

The frost has not yet influenced the top fruit sales, but according to Zweer van Aalsburg of Fruitmasters, this will change. "When the temperature goes below zero, less is bought on the market. In countries like Germany and Holland the sales move to retail, but in many Central and Eastern European countries the consumption pattern changes and the fruit sales decrease."

"The sales of pears has been pretty big in the past few weeks. The price as well as the volume has gone up. The price level of the Conference pears is at a level of between 42 and 50 cents, says Zweer. "For the next few weeks we expect a stable market."

"The apple market is under more under pressure. The Elstar prices, between 40 and 55 cents for good quality, are reasonable, but there's price pressure everywhere. The lesser qualities are especially pressured", says the salesman. "The home market is our main market for apples. With our concept varieties we want to serve new markets, but with the regular varieties we usually export to Scandinavia, Germany and Russia and we have hefty competition from Poland. "

The salesman says that the quality of the top fruit is good, although the hardness is slightly less than in previous years.
