Mango from Ecuador and Peru imported by US

According to the National Mango Board during week 2 of 2012, about 966.723 boxes of mangoes were sent to the United States, which represented an increase of 30.8% compared to week 1.

In the mango crop report of the National Mango Board, last updated January 20, states that Ecuador sent about 441.840 boxes of mangoes to the U.S during week 2 of 2012 which was a 2.8% increase compared the previous week. It also states that the Ecuadorian mango season for the U.S. market ended on January 22nd. It was observed that the price of mango varieties Tommy Atkins and Kent went up in the ports of South Florida, Southern California and Philadelphia. Significantly, the mango season in Ecuador began in October of last year and it was expected the U.S would receive about 7.6 million boxes of mangoes.

As for mangoes from Peru, the National Mango Board states that 524.883 boxes were imported by the United States during the second week of the new year which accounted for 69% compared to the first week of 2012. The average price of Peruvian Kent mangoes of week 2 admitted by Philadelphia and South Florida increased. Although Ecuador's mango season finished, it is expected for the Peruvian one to close in late March with approximately 5.4 million boxes exported to the United States. One of the producers informed Fresh Plaza that during the 3rd week of January the production shrank slightly so that prices will tend to rise relatively in the coming weeks.
