Israel: Early season carrots for Arava

Arava, one of Israel's most prominent export companies, is proudly announcing the commencement of its Carrot season. The state of Israel grows somewhere in the vicinity of 280,000 tons of carrots each year, of which 40% are designated to the local market. The remaining 60% goes for export.

Main export destinations include, Russia, Eastern Europe, Canada and, the USA. "Competitors may be found in countries such as China, Holland, Belgium, Romania, Poland and others. However, I am confident that our marginal advantage is best characterized in our unique weather conditions and the growers' capacity to utilize both northern and southern regions of Israel. By doing so, cultivation can be done at any time." claims carrot advocate Yanay Levi.

Arava's Carrot season started at the beginning of December and will carry on until the end of June. The most popular early varieties (December till February) are, Maestro, Concerto, Dordon and Valore. These varieties are French in origin but have been adjusted to suit Israel's unique conditions. They can best be differentiated from other varieties by their very sweet taste and dark colour.

As of February, Nairobi will become the more dominant variety, considered to be one of the finest. Very resilient to climatic changes, extremely sweet, high yield potential, dark colour and large in size, it reaches up to 16cm in Length with a diameter of up to 55mm. "It is imperative to point out that carrots are being packed during the entire season in a variety of options to best fit retailers and wholesalers thought the world" said Mr Levi.
