Leon van Meir:
"Netherlands: "More and more growers arrange supply before sowing or planting"
"We notice that changes are taking place over the last few years in the 'trading chain'" Leon van Meir of Van Meir Onions, the Netherlands, says. "A number of years ago the larger part of the trade in onions went from the grower to sorting company via one or more commission agents. Sometimes there was a speculator or processor involved, who resold the onions. Not a transparent market with a lot of intermediate links a number of people had to make a living of. Now we notice that growers have arranged their supply before sowing or planting."
"We took this requirement into account from the moment we started processing onions. We are an open and transparent sales partner, who are open to renewal and working without links in between. We directly supply various exporters, who in turn supply the whole world. If the one can do a little less then the other will be in a position to do a lot, because he will trade at a totally different destination. Our clients are very enthousiastic about our modern way of doing business. As a result our sales are increasing" Leon says.
"Onion growers can more easily, based on the growth we have experienced over the last year. We are convinced that this trend will continue, so that we will become a more important player in the market" Leon concludes.
