More than 20 million kilos

Spain: Citrus export volume from Almeria increased 30%

In the first ten months of 2011 tAlmeria sold oranges and tangerines valued at more than 13 million Euro.

More than 20 million kilos of citrus were exported by the province between January and October of last year, a volume that represents a 30% increase over the same period of 2010. It is the most important partial balance done in recent years, data is taken from the the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade prepared by the Delegation of Agriculture and Fisheries from the Andalucía Board.

These shipments, made by 46 exporting companies, have accumulated a turnover of 13.1 million Euro, representing an increase of 8.54% over the reference period of 2010.

For the commercial operations value, citrus exports account for 0.8% of the total sales from Almeria overseas, which places this sector in the tenth position of the provincial 'ranking'. Nationally, Almería holds the eleventh position among the citrus exporting provinces, with a share of 0.8%. Valencia is the top exporter, with
49.1% of the national total, followed by Castellón de la Plana (21.7%) and Murcia (13.7%).

36% is exported to Germany.

95% of oranges, tangerines and lemons that Almería exports are consumed in Europe, while 5% will be sent to Algeria. The main citrus destination is the Germany, market that has valued this product at more than 4.78 million Euro, more than 36% of the total. The second best customer is Italy, where nearly 22% of production was sent, while 12.6% was exported to France. Other citrus destinations are the Netherlands, Algeria, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Hungary and the UK.

Almería, leader in the horticultural export of Andalusia and Spain, is increasing sales of its agricultural products abroad, a fact that is valued by the delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, José Antonio Salinas, who encourages businesses in the province to continue investing in the foreign sector as one of the ways address the current economic and financial difficulties and to offset the fall in domestic demand. In this sense, Salinas says Andalucía´s Board will continue to support the food industry, both with aids for product improvement as well as actions to promote it.
