US and European agriculture is losing influence

The current leading position of US and European agriculture is being threatened. This was reported by the British newspaper 'The Guardian'. The newspaper reports this following a publication by the Scottish Agricultural College. In this scientists name the lack of natural resources as cause of the threatened position, but mainly the growing power of China, Russia and Brazil.

The authors of the report developed a global power index, according to the Guardian. In this the US is still the larger player on the world economics market at the moment, followed closely by Europe. China and Russia are in third and fourth place. The index is based on figures from the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the American Ministry of Agriculture and the UN amongst others. The British agriculture sector will be affected by the predicted development in the same way as the US and the EU. As a response the scientists call for a significant enlargement of the production capacity so as not to lose the global influence. Critics fear the growers could use the report to pressure the government to ensure that environment and consumer protection measures are revoked.
