After a bad start to the Canary tomato season in October and November with large volumes and low prices because of the mild weather a good month followed in December. Marco Slobbe of Fortuna Frutos is quite positive about this year's prospects. "Traditionally January is a difficult month, but we got through the holidays with not too big volumes and demand is already increasing now."
Fortuna Frutos supply tomatoes from both Spain, the Canary Islands and The Netherlands. The prices of tomatoes are at present at a level of 5/6 euro. "The weather is the deciding factor for the development of the season. If the weather really turns cold it could well become a first class spring. If the weather remains this mild then we will have to wait and see what will come" Marco says. "Because we do need something in order to compensate for the months of October and November. It cannot be down to the quality, because that is first class!"
The Canary cucumber season has been difficult up to now. Because of the mild weather in Spain supply was more than sufficient resulting in low prices from the start of the season. This week we see a change for the first time, but prices are still under cost" Marco concludes. "Cold weather in Southern Europe and here would suit us fine."
