Exports from the Organic Banana of Central Piurana (CEPIBO), passed from 100 to
120 containers annually in 2008 to 843 in 2011, according to Donald LecarnaquƩ, President of this association of small producers.
"Our organization is relatively new, we started in 2008 with 2 containers a week. In 2009, shipments doubled, and in 2010 it was over 500. Now, we are appearing in the statistics as the second largest exporter of organic bananas," he explained.
For 2012, LecarnaquƩ considered it was difficult to project how much would be exported. "What is important is to take advantage of the market opportunities. Today we have the doors open for other organizations to join us," he said.
Also, for this year, within his strategic plan, there is the installation of a cold plant,
in order to avoid paying extra costs spent by containers more days. In addition, a banana puree processing plant is needed, with an investment of approximately USD$ 1 million, since this product has a market in the European Union (EU), specifically, in France.
