US (FL): Florida avocados finish above forecast

The Florida avocado season has just about wrapped up, and final production numbers for the state are anticipated to be above initial projections.

Industry-wide production was forecast at 1.1 million bushels, but current reports have production at 1.18 million bushels, with another 20,000 bushels anticipated to come in. The resulting 1.2 million bushels would put production at 10% above the forecast.

“It has been a very good season,” says Mary Ostlund, Director of Marketing for Brooks Tropicals.

“We've had a record crop year, and volumes are up to levels we had before Hurricane Andrew,” she adds.

A lot of that volume has come from new growth that was planted in the wake of the Hurricane.

“It's been a steady climb back to pre-Andrew volumes,” she notes, “it's getting back up there.”
