Sri Lankan government prepares to re-impose packing laws for fruit and veg

The Sri Lankan government has made arrangements to re-impose the law on transporting fruits and vegetables in plastic crates by January 15th. Steps have been taken to provide plastic crates to traders and farmers at concessionary prices. Agrarian Services Minister S.M. Chandrasena says that plastic crates could be purchased in instalments.

He has said that a crate with a capacity to pack 30Kg is priced at Rs. 500, a 35-40Kg capacity crate at Rs. 637 and a 50Kg capacity crate at Rs. 1,465. The government had to suspend the packing laws last month due to massive protest from traders and farmers.

Authorities however, said the law would be amended and re-imposed this month. The amended law has released the farmer of the regulations and the small vehicles used in transport of vegetables are also free of the plastic crates law according to new gazette.
