NZ: New peach variety perfected

A North Otago couple have developed a new peach variety in their backyard. Helen Brookes and husband Terry Fowler of Georgetown first noticed the quality of the fruit on a small young tree by their carport. The tree appeared immune to leaf curl and produced a freestone-style peach with a lovely aroma, sweet yellow flesh and good colour.

Trials are in progress at Thirkettles orchard at Hope, near Nelson, where the peach will be compared with eight other types of the Haven variety. The couple have named the new peach Sweet Perfection.
