AU: Yarra Valley strawberry crops destroyed by hail and heat

Hail and heat have conspired to wreck strawberry crops in the Yarra Valley. Several farmers at Coldstream are counting their losses after the Christmas Day storm and recent hot weather killed their fragile plants. "The hail damaged the plants - and whatever was left has now fried and been finished off," said Bruno De Ingeniis, of Yarra Valley Strawberries.

He believed a quarter of the region had been wrecked. Vegetable growers hope the forecast cooler days will prevent lettuces and other salad staples from wilting, while other fruits appear to have coped with recent high temperatures after heavy irrigation.
