“Previously, young coconuts were only available in Asian shops. It is now becoming a more familiar product with a wider audience. The international supermarket chains also dare to take the risk on young coconuts. The shelf in supermarkets with coconut products is becoming larger and larger,” Zwolle explains. “We do a lot of acquisition, and we notice that when young coconuts are given a chance in the assortment, they can do really well. By focusing on the product, we can be very flexible and help our customers to introduce the young coconuts in the right way. Precisely those companies that were sceptical during the first talks, have become the customers who sell many CocoBombs.”
“We know the product through and through, when we started we focused mainly on catering. We also did our own promotional events. We now work closely with event caterers. At nearly every festival in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany young coconuts are being sold. This also helps familiarise consumers with young coconuts,” says Zwolle. “Young coconuts seem like complicated fruits to open, but once you realise the trick to opening them, it becomes very easy to crack the nut. To simplify this, every CocoBomb coconut features a link to a few how-to-open films. Young coconuts contain about 300 ml of sweet coconut water, and the flesh is also delicious to eat or use in recipes.”
When asked if young coconuts are only popular during the summer months, the young entrepreneur answers: “Not at all, coconut water is very healthy and prices are lower especially during the winter months, due to the high season in Thailand. We already have some fun promotions planned for the winter, to bring the product into the spotlight, and in summer we then increase volume.”
The young coconuts of CocoBomb are shipped by Cool Control in Maasdijk, the Netherlands.
