Avocado prices up to 15 euro

Avocado prices are sky high right now, says Jan Vermeiren from Exofi, "Therefore, demand has fallen. Whenever the price rises above 10 Euro, demand is always a bit disappointing. The Ryan, Fuerte and Pinkerton avocados cost 11 Euro and the ready-to-eat Hass avocados cost 15 Euro."

Highs and lows
Jan says that around Ramadan things change a bit, "During this period there is always demand for this product. It is difficult to predict how long the prices will remain at this level. I have heard from exporters that they have little supply, so this situation could last another week. There are lots of highs and lows with avocados. Price wise, avocados are similar to limes. Sometimes cheap, sometimes expensive. There's no set price." In a few months the weather in Spain will help things out, "Once that's here, the price always falls quickly. The transport costs from Spain are also lower."

80% of Exofi's avocados are Hass avocados, "The green varieties are becoming less popular. They are only bought by immigrants. Belgians eat Hass avocados. Preferably, the ready-to-eat kind." The green varieties currently come from South Africa and the Hass comes from Peru.
