Low lime prices in Europe

Big supplies of imported limes in Europe have caused prices there to dip. But as summer is the time of year when the most limes are consumed, importers are expecting prices to increase in the coming weeks.

“The market is very bad in terms of prices,” said Olivier Fakhri, commercial Director of Georges Helfer France. “Depending on the size of fruit, prices are about 4 or 5 Euro per box (4-4.5 kg), which is very bad.” Most of the imported limes come from Mexico and Brazil, and supplies from both of those regions are plentiful at the moment. Mexican limes are greener and Brazilian limes have more juice, but both types of fruit are garnering similar prices because supplies are so great.

“Sometime in the middle of the summer Brazil changes production regions, and then we might have to import from Israel, but we usually only get limes from Mexico or Brazil,” noted Olivier. “We usually bring the limes to Europe by boat unless a customer wants especially green or fresh limes from Mexico or prices are enough to justify transportation by air.” Consumption peaks in the summer, which is why Olivier believes the market will turn in the coming weeks. The changing weather could also change supply dynamics and lead to stronger prices.

“The market seems to be a bit better even now,” said Olivier. “Prices are increasing, and I think they will continue to increase in the next few weeks.”
