Spain: MacAndrews to operate refrigerated railway service between Murcia and Bilbao

MacAndrews, S.A., a firm of the shipping group CMA-CGM, will strengthen its current European inter-modal refrigerated service in 45 feet containers with the implementation of a refrigerated train to connect Murcia and Bilbao from April.

The new service will start with two shipments per week from late April, which will turn into a daily refrigerated railway service in the short term. This way, MacAndrews consolidates as the inter-modal option that connects the Spanish horticultural producers with Europe through MacAndrews ships that operate in Bilbao's harbour. This innovative project, which is pioneering in Spain, counts with two strategic allies: Continental Rail as railway operator and Grupo Fuentes for the management of the railway terminal in Nonduermas, Murcia.

Nonduermas' terminal

The project will be complemented by the redevelopment and management of the railway terminal of Nonduermas, granted in public tender, as well as the investment in a new system of generators fitted in the train which will supply the necessary electric power, as well as a control system to ensure the cold chain is maintained.
