Shane Talling - Veg-UK:

"Last week marked the end of our cauliflower exports"

The vegetable export season is drawing to an end for Veg-UK, which has been exporting cauliflower, broccoli, and Savoy cabbage since mid-September — a considerably later start than in previous years due to this summer's exceptionally dry weather.

"The availability is now declining as we approach the end of the summer season," explains Shane Talling, Director of Business Development at Veg-UK. "With colder weather setting in and daylight hours reducing, crop growth has slowed, particularly in our Kent production, which is based in the South East of the UK."

"Last week marked the end of our cauliflower exports. With the start of some UK supermarkets' promotions, colder temperatures, and shorter days, there hasn't been enough supply to continue exporting. In addition, countries such as France, Italy, and Spain have begun their own production, limiting export opportunities in Europe. Despite this, domestic demand for UK cauliflower has remained strong, with healthy orders from both retail and wholesale markets."

Veg-UK exports vegetables to Europe when produce is out of season there or when shortages occur. The company's export season typically runs from March to October.

"We export to several European countries, including Italy, Germany, and Sweden," says Talling. "In recent weeks, export prices have been higher than domestic ones, even after accounting for the additional costs involved.

"This season has been particularly challenging," he continues. "Back in March, growing conditions were perfect, and crops were planted under ideal circumstances. However, the severe lack of rain that followed for several weeks took its toll, with acres and acres of crops destroyed in the fields. While the crops have since recovered, some quality issues remain in some areas."

Veg-UK has been exporting for many years and also provides customs clearance services to make the process easier for customers. The company exports under both the Chef's Choice and Veg-UK brands.
