Gross yields for ware potatoes and seed onions in the Netherlands have reached their highest levels in 25 years, according to provisional 2025 crop yield estimates from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
Ware potatoes
The gross yield for ware potatoes is projected to be nearly 37% higher than in 2024. The total cultivation area expanded by almost 9% to more than 83,000 hectares, the largest since 2000. Average gross yield per hectare is estimated at 53.5 tons, almost a quarter higher than last year. The total gross yield is expected to reach 4.4 million tons.

Seed onions
Seed onion production also increased, with total gross yields estimated at 1.7 million tons—17% higher than in 2024. The cultivation area grew by around 4%, while average yields per hectare rose 11% to 52.1 tons. CBS notes that favourable weather conditions, including many hours of sunshine, contributed to the higher yields, though the quality of some crops may be affected by soil diseases, leading to potential losses.

Red seed onion production expanded by 35%, while the area under yellow seed onions declined by almost 2%. Despite this reduction, higher per-hectare yields boosted the total output of yellow onions to about 1.4 million tons (+13%), with red onions reaching approximately 290,000 tons (+45%).

Data and methodology
CBS's provisional estimates are based on cultivated areas published in June and updated with current yield data provided by agricultural experts. Gross yields are calculated using crop area and expected yields per hectare. Final 2025 crop yield figures, based on an arable farm survey, are scheduled for publication in January 2026.
